Val’s Musical Journey
Val discovered a passion for music at an early age. She taught herself to play Beatle songs at age 10, sitting in her room in Winthrop, Maine. The earthy unpretentious qualities of Maine culture had significant influence in her development as a songwriter. Her musical adventures took off when she formed the rock band “Distortion” with her brother a year later. They played the usual “Smoke on the Stairway to Free Bird Heaven” classic rock songs at school dances and parties. After the band broke up, Val found her musical passion in exploring acoustic music, becoming intrigued with the guitar styles of James Taylor, Mississippi John Hurt and various country blues artists. She also discovered the beautiful melodic guitar tunings of Joni Mitchell.

Val moved across the country, covering songs in various music configurations including solos, duos and bluegrass bands, finally playing lead guitar and singing harmony vocals for Bellingham, Washington based acoustic pop band “Men Without Pants”. She loved the band’s name and their catchy songwriting. However, she still found herself playing the same support role as she had in most of the bands she had been in before. She passionately wanted to develop her own musical voice and songwriting.

Val says that her musical journey truly began at the age of 33 when she began consistently writing and recording her own music. She wrote most of the songs recorded on her first CD “Home, Highways and Bad Hair Days” while living in Lumpy Dump Cabin 11 in Bellingham. A place she found safe to begin expressing her musical depth.
You will find this singer/songwriter now living in Seattle. To the joy of friends and fans, Val continues to bring her music alive in the world. Her latest CD, “The Sunny Side” is a collection of unflinchingly positive songs, celebrating the joy of living from the heart and honoring the longings of the soul.
